I Went Barefoot Today

One Day Without Shoes April 16 2009

I went barefoot today-all day, everywhere I went- to help raise awareness of the diseases and issues that come with not having shoes to wear. Here are some facts:

  • Fact #1: In some developing nations, children must walk for miles to food, clean water and to seek medical help.
  • Fact #2: Cuts and sores on feet can lead to serious infection.
  • Fact #3: Often, children cannot attend school barefoot.
  • Fact #4: In Ethiopia, approximately one million people are suffering from Podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease caused by walking barefoot in volcanic soil.
  • Fact #5: Podoconiosis is 100% preventable by wearing shoes.
Right now I am reading the book They Poured Fire On Us From the Sky, the true story of three lost boys from Sudan. They walked for miles, for months, without shoes. Many people lost limbs and died because of infections in their feet from not having shoes to wear. Besides the horror of the war they were running from, they had to watching thousands of people die of completely preventable ailments.
This is just one of many causes that we can help with. Buy a pair of Toms, and they give a pair to a kid who doesn’t have any. Go here for details.
