It happened when I least expected it, which is perfect. We were in Houston staying with Chris’ parents for what I thought was just a crawfish boil for his brother. We woke up Saturday morning, went to work out at their church (they have a gym!) and went back to the house around 10:30am. His parents said they needed us to go get the crawfish around 11:30 and it was about 15 minutes away. So, being the brat that I am, I got mad because I knew I wouldn’t have ample time to get ready.
I went upstairs, showered, attempted to do my hair in 10 minutes, and threw on some funky clothes. Around 11:15, Chris came and asked if I was almost ready. He was hoping I’d take a little longer, but I was ready to just go get the dern crawdaddies, so we left. He got a mysterious call from his dad about “the crawfish” and then called him back about it a couple minutes later, but being as how I’m CLUELESS, I didn’t suspect anything!! We stopped at this park around the Green Belt because he wanted to “show me something real fast”. We strolled along and passed a couple, then saw a picnic basket and a blanket laid out by the lake. I mentioned how cute that was and I wondered who it was for. Chris has to spell it out for me to let me know it was for us, because I still thought we were going to get the stupid crawfish!!
Anyway, so we sat down to have this picnic that his parents had prepared while we worked out, and I still wanted to know who was going to get the crawfish if we were there! Hehehe. Silly girl. So, after a 30 minute beautiful picnic, Chris told me he had a few more things in the basket for me. He pulled out the first red rose, told me it represented the past, and asked me to promise that I would always remember the good things about our past- but not to dwell on the bad things… so I promised. Then he pulled another rose out that represented the present, and asked me to promise that I would always be grateful for what God is doing in our lives- so of course, I did. Then came the kicker. He pulled out the third red rose that represented the future and told me to untie the ribbon around the tissue. By this time, my hands were violently shaking, so I had him do it. When the ribbon and tissue came off, my ring was tied to another ribbon, which was tied to the rose. Then, he had me promise to always look forward to our future and what God was going to do in our lives… and had me promise to be his WIFE!
So, of course I did. His parents were in on it, my parents knew everything. But I was COMPLETELY clueless. It was romantic, it was gorgeous, it was perfect and since then, we have lived happily ever after!
P.S. His parents got the crawfish and they were mackin’!
